Ahmedabad ISKCON Vachanamrut Excerpts - Day 3 and 4

    DAY 3

Aadhyaatmik unnati ke liye 3 vastuen chahiye:
[3 things are needed for spiritual progress]:

    Mitti, Pani aur Prakash:-
    Mitti - Susangati ki, arthaat sadhu ki ya shastra ki sangati;
    Pani – Bhagwan ki Bhakti ki;
    Prakash – Gyan ka.
    [Soil, Water & Light:-
    Soil – of good company, i.e. the company of pious people or of scriptures;
Water – of Devotion to God; &
    Light – of Knowledge.]

Bhagwan ka arth hai shad bhagon ka swami:
[The word ‘Bhagawan’ for God implies that He is the Master/Owner of the 6 bhagas (or qualities/features)]:

    1. Aishwarya
    2. Veerya
    3. Yash
    4. Shree
    5. Gyan
    6. Vairagya

    1) Aishwarya:
Aishwarya jaata hai kyonki jeev shram nahi karta.
Aishwarya jaane se deenta aur paraadheenta aati hai.

[‘Aishwarya’ (abundance) is lost if the person doesn’t engage in labour (i.e. hard work).
Lack of ‘Aishwarya’ (or, lack of abundance) leads to incapability (‘deenta’) & dependence (‘paradheenta’) on others.]

    2) Veerya:
    Veerya ka arth hai bal/shakti.
Yah jaati hai jab manav dusre se aasha rakhta hai.
Jo khud kar sakte ho vah zaroor khud hi karo. Shram na karne se sharer sthool hota hai aur yah rog ko badhaata hai.
Veerya jaane se Sukh chale jaata hai.
    [Veerya means strength/energy.
This is lost when a person keeps expectations from others.
Whatever you can do by yourself, you must. Lack of hard work makes your body plump & this increases chances of disease.
Loss of ‘Veerya’ leads to loss of comforts/happiness.]

    3) Yash:
Yash ka naash hota hai lobh se.
Daan dene se yash badhta hai.
Yash jaane se heenta aati hai.

[‘Yash’(or popularity) is lost due to ‘lobh’ (greed).
Engaging in charity enhances ‘yash’ or popularity.
Loss of ‘yash’ or popularity leads to an inferiority complex (‘heenta’).]

    4) Shree:
Lakshmi jaati hai kyonki tumne vyasan aur fyasan me iska naash kiya hai.
Shree jaane se jeev janm-maran main fansta hai.

[‘Shree’(or Wealth, or Pure/Divine Wealth) gets lost because you have destroyed it in fashions & addictions.
Loss of ‘Shree’ leads to getting stuck in the cycle of birth & death.]

    5) Gyan:
Vishay-chintan se gyan beh jaata hai.
Gyan jaane se ahankaar aur avidya aati hai.

[‘Gyan’(Knowledge) gets lost by focusing the mind upon worldly objects/subjects (i.e. worldly affairs).
Loss of ‘Gyan’, or Knowledge leads to ‘Ahankaar’ (or, an inflated ego) & ‘Avidya’ (or, ignorance, i.e. a lack of understanding of the self & the world - i.e. blurred perceptions)]

    6) Vairagya:
Bhog vrutii se vairagya chale jaata hai.
    Vairagya jaane se…………………….

[‘Vairagya’ (Dispassion) is lost by an attitude of (material) consumption.
Loss of ‘Vairagya’ (or, loss of Dispassion) leads to…………………….]

Shastra ki maryaada main raho aur dharm ka tyag na karo to manav ka jeevan safal hota hai.
[Obeying the disciplines & limits set by the scriptures as well as not casting aside ‘Dharm’ or the code of conduct in life leads to a successful life.]

‘Yam’ se bahirmukh ki shudhhi hoti hai.
[‘Yam’ leads to the purification of the external self (i.e. improvement of the external personality).]

‘Niyam’ se Antarmukh ki shudhhi hoti hai.
[‘Niyam’ leads to the putrification of the internal self (i.e. improvement of the basic internal character.)]

Manav ke paas aisi cheez an ho jo kisi ko ani chamak dikhaakar irshya karaaye. Pradarshan kabhi na ho.
[One should not have any such thing that induces jealousy in others by its display. Never exhibit such a thing.]

Sadhu bano – jo bhi hai hamaare paas parmaatma ki prasaadi hai.
[Be pious – whatever we have is the gift of God to us.]

Kabhi udhaar na lo aur na udhaar do.
    [Never borrow nor lend.]

Ann dev hai. iska niradar na karo.
[Food is God. Don’t disrespect it.]

Din main ek baar bhojan karo, ek baar falaahaar karo aur raat ko keval dudh piyo.
[In a day, have meals once, fruits once & at night, take only milk.]

Parmaatma Naarad ji ko kehte hain ki agar antim samay main mera bhakt mujhe yaad na kar sake to main use yaad karta hun.
[Parmaatma tells Narad ji that even if a devotee fails to remember me in his last moments, I still remember him.]

Mahaprabhu ji ke anusaar, Bhakti do prakaar ki hoti hai:
[According to Mahaprabhi (Shree Vallabhacharya), Devotion is of two kinds]:

    1) Madhura Bhakti [Loving Devotion],
    2) Virodha Bhakti [Opposing/Hateful Devotion].
Bheeshma Stuti, arthaat Bheeshma Stava-Raaj main 11 shlok hain.
Pratham 9 shlok navdha Bhakti ka pratinidhitva kar rahe hain aur antim 2 Ahamta aur Mamta se chhutne ki punji
hai. Isse Mukti praapt ho jati hai.
[‘Bheeshma Stuti’, or ‘Bheeshma Stava-Raaj’ consists of 11 shlokas.

The first 9 shlokas represent ‘Navdha Bhakti’, or the 9 Kinds of Devotion & the last two represent the key to
liberation from Ahamta(Ego) & Mamta(Attachment). This leads to Liberation of the Soul.]

    Sambandh hi sansaar hai.
[Relationship (or attachment in a relationship) only is the World (in the mind).]

Mahapurush kisi ke saath sambandh nahi banaate, keval vyavhaar karte hain.
[The Mahapurushas (i.e. The Great Souls) don’t establish any relation with anyone. They only engage in practical conduct.]

    DAY 4

Jab tak Lakshman rupi Vairaagya hai, tab tak Shanti rupi Sita ka koi Moh rupi Ravan apharan nahikar sakta.
[As long as Dispassion (Vairagya ) represented by Lakshman is present, no Delusion (Moh) personified by Ravan can manage to kidnap your Peace (Shanti), manifested as Sita.]

Moh ki utpatti sangati se hoti hai.
[Delusion (Moh) is born of Companionship (Sangati)]

Jahan Moh ho toh, ‘Moh sakal vyadhin kar Mula.’
[Delusion (Moh) is the root of all (sakal) afflictions (Vyadhin)]

Bhogaasakti man ko bigaarti hai aur dravyaasakti tan ko.
[Material Aspirations (Bhogaasakti ) spoil the mind while the pursuit of material consumption (Dravyasakti) spoils the body.]

Asatya ka sahaara lene se Shanti nahi aati.
[Taking recourse to Falsehood (Asatya) never yields Peace (Shanti).]

Shareer apne dharm se nahi bach sakta.
[The body cannot escape its inherent characteristics.]

Mahapurush kahein : “Sarvadaa Sarvabhaavena Nishchintena Bhagwaan Bhajaneeya.”
Arthaat, har samay, har bhaav se Bhagwaan ko nishchint chitta se bhajna chahiye.
[The Mahapurushas say that God should be remembered, or loved, or sought, or anyhow connected to (i.e. doing of ‘Bhajan’) at all times & with all feelings possible with a totally worry- free mind.]

“Bhaava hi Vidyate Devo Tasmaat Bhaava hi Kaaranam.”
Arthaat, Bhaav hai toh Dev hai.

[If there is emotion, there is God.]

Nishchint raho. Chinta koi jawaab nahi deti. Chinta nahi chintan karo.
[Do not worry. Worry gives no answers. Instead of worrying, focus on working (Chintan).]

Jeev bhog ka chintan karta hai toh:
Ø Man Chanchal hota hai, aur
    Ø Budhhi Jad hoti hai.

Phir bahut lambe samay ke liye praayashchit karna padta hai, tap karna padta hai.

[If a person pursues material aspirations (Bhog-chintan), then:

Ø The Mind becomes restless, &
    Ø The Intellect dull.

Then, he/she has to engage in repentance, hard penances for a very long time.]

‘Tap’ ka arth hai prassanta se swadharm ka paalan karna.
Kasht uthaakar jo Bhakti karta hai, Parmaatma unse bahut prasann hote hain.

    Bina pareeksha Parmaatma sweekarte nahi.
[‘TAP’ implies carrying out one’s duties joyfully.
God gets extremely delighted with those who engage in Devotion bearing tremendous troubles.
God doesn’t accept you without a Test.]

Prabhu ko yaad rakho toh duniya ke sukh-dukh prabhaav nahi daalte.
Prabhu ka bhajan, arthaat smarn karne se Paap, Taap aur Santaap se bach sakte hain.

[Remembering God nullifies the effect of any worldly joys or despair.
Remembering God, I.e, engaging in bhajan, helps escape (or, overcome)’ Paap’ (Sin/Effects or
    Sin), ‘Taap‘(Adversity/Physical Anguish) & ‘Santaap’(Extreme Mental/Emotional Anguish).]

Sukh main Manav mazaa hi leta hai. Par such main jo Parmaatma ko bhajte hain, Parmaatma unka man har lete hain.
[In comfort, Man only enjoys the world. But those who remember God even in comfort, God steals away their Hearts.]

Agar kisi cheez ya vyakti ko Parmaatma se alag samajhte ho toh bhed budhhi hai.
[If you think that any person or object is separate from God then you have a divisive intellect.]

Dwesh buddhi se jeevan ka samudra jo meetha hai, vah khaara ho jata hai.
[A hateful intellect saltens the sea of life, which is otherwise sweet.]

Jo aaj aapki prashansa karta hai, vah kal ninda bhi karega.
[Those who praise you today will criticize you tomorrow.]

    Samay balwaan hai, manushya nahi.
    [Time is powerful, not Man.]

Sanatan Dharm Satya par aadhaarit hai.
Baudhh Dharm Karuna par aadhaarit hai.
Jain Dharm Ahimsa par aadhaarit hai.
Isai Dharm Prem par aadhaarit hai.

[‘Sanatan Dharm’ is based upon ‘Truth.’
‘Buddhism’ is based upon Compassion/Mercy. ‘Jainism’ is based upon the principle of Non-
Violence. ‘Christianity’ is based upon Love.]

    Kalyug matlab kalah matlab sangharsh.
Isliye, shreshtha purush kisi ke saath vivaad nahi karte.

    [‘Kalyug’ implies disputes(kalah) & therefore strife(sangharsh).
That is why, people of the highest order don’t engage in conflict with anyone.]

Bhale hi aapki koi ninda kare, aap shanti rakhoge toh vahi aapki prashansa karega.
[Even if someone criticizes you, if you stay silent, he will himself praise you.]

Ek hi din main chaaron yug - Sat-Yug, Treta-Yug, Dwapar-Yug aur Kal-yug hote hain.
    [In a single day itself, all four ‘yugas’- ‘Sat-Yug’, ‘Treta-Yug, ‘Dwapar-Yug’, & ‘Kal-Yug’ exist.]

    *****
Kalyug main kirtan se Parmaatma ki praapti kar sakte hain.
[In ‘Kalyug’, god can obtained through “Kirtan’ (communal/melodious singing of the Lord’s glory.)]

Raat ko Prabhu ko yaad karne se Parmaatma prasann hote hain.
[Remembering God at night makes Him happy.]

Jue main bina shram ke dhan aata hai. Yah galat hai, isme Kali ka vaas hai.
[Gambling begets wealth without hard work. This is wrong. This wealth is filled with ‘Kali’(i.e seed of nuisance.)]

Hinsa main Kali ka nivaas hai.
[Violence(Hinsa) is inhabited by ‘Kali’ (i.e. seed of nuisance/destruction)]

Rog, Dushman, Karz aur Paap – in chaaron ke liye koi darwaaza band nahi.
[Disease (Rog), Foe (Dushman), Debt (Karz) & Sin (Paap) – for these four, no doors are closed.]

Maan, sammaan main jo fansa ho, usme Abhimaan hai.
[Those who are stuck in seeking respect have an huge ego.]

Bhukh aur Pyaas ko sehna zaroori hai, nahi toh aadhyaatmik maarg main safal nahi ho sakte.
[It is extremely important to be able to bear Hunger & Thirst, or else it is impossible to succeed in the Spiritual path.]

Vaangmay vaani hi Parikshit ko maar sakti thi (shraap ke rup main), aur vaani hi use bachaa sakti hai (Shukdev ji dwaara Bhagwat ke rup main).
[Words only could have killed Parikshit (in form of the curse), & words only can save him (in the form of Shrimad Bhagwatam through Shree Shukdev ji Maharaj)]

Sachhi ninda pachaaye, vo toh thik hai. Par jhuthi ninda pachaana toh zeher hai. Tum Shaant raho.
[Bearing just criticism is OK. But tolerating unfair criticism is Poison. Still, you must stay Silent/ Calm.]

Koi aapki prashansa kare toh kaan band kar lo.
[If anyone praises you, close your ears.]

Jis Indriya se Paap ho, us indriya ko dand dein toh Yamraja dand nahi deta.
[If you punish very senses that led you astray (to sin), ‘Yamraja’ (or the God of death) doesn’t punish you.]

Jis din paap ho, us din bhojan na karo, aur adhik jaap karo.
[If you sin on any day, avoid having food & chant the Lord’s name more on that day.]

Mrityu nikat aaye toh bhog feeka lagta hai.
[Imminence of death leads to disinterest in material consumption.]
